Introduction to Piano Roll Scripting

Take control of the piano roll!

This is a tutorial video + script kit that spans nearly 30 minutes and shows you everything you need in order to get started with piano roll scripting, including:

• Defining and creating user inputs
• Using user input to modify internal data
• Knobs, checkboxes and other GUI elements
• Constructing and modifying note objects and other data
• The score system and affiliated methods
• Quantizing note length and positions to the grid 
• Modifying notes, velocity, color, and other note attributes
• Understanding the API and general structure
• Finding information when you need it most
• And so much more!

Whether you've seen the previous VFX Scripting tutorial or not, this gives you all the tools you'd need in order to understand what's going on in the API and how to bend it to your will. 

This also comes with both the completed script (from the tutorial video) as well as a simplified 'default' script that you can use as a launchpad while building your own from scratch, with just the basic structure outlined for you!

Warning: Some Python required!

While you can certainly learn Python in a hands-on environment like this (provided you don't mind seeking alternative explanations and deepening your knowledge as needed), this is generally aimed at those who at least know the very basics of object-oriented programming.  If you'd like to see a tutorial on Python itself for the preparation of materials like this, let me know :).
